ANGEE Policy

Children in Detention

ANGEE (The Association of Non Government Education Employees - Independent Education Union SA Branch) [now IEU(SA)] resolves that the Association is opposed to the mandatory detention of the children of asylum seekers.

It is the view of the Association that no children belong in gaol and that such detention is detrimental to their development and physical and psychological well-being.

It is the Association's position that detention centres are not appropriate placements for children whilst they await the outcome of their own asylum applications and those of their parents.

ANGEE [now IEU(SA)] endorses the right of children of asylum seekers held in mandatory detention to attend school under United Nations conventions to which Australia is a signatory.

In accord with the rights of all other families in Australia, ANGEE [now IEU(SA)] supports the right of children of asylum seekers to attend a school which meets and supports their cultural, language and religious needs, whether that be a government school or a non-government school.

Endorsed at ANGEE [now IEU(SA)] Council on 5 March 2003
