Fact Sheet #7

Reps, Branches & Council

For the purpose of coordinating member contact and activity, IEU(SA) members are grouped into school-based Branches.

The only members who are not a part of their own school Branch are the Principal and Deputy Principal members who have their own Branch set up under the IEU(SA) constitution. Other special interest branches may be approved by the Executive of the Association.

Financial members at each Branch must annually elect from among themselves an Association Representative whose job it is to communicate between the Association, the members and school management. Reps are expected to recruit new members and to organise meetings of the Branch from time to time. Reps are, however, not expected to undertake advocacy or negotiation beyond their experience, training and confidence level.

The Branch members also elect from their number, Delegate(s) to the IEU(SA) Council. Each Branch is entitled to 1 delegate vote for every 20 (or part thereof) members. The Branch may choose one Delegate to carry all of its votes or several delegates to share the votes ... it is up to the Branch to determine how it wishes to be represented. Council meets at least twice per year and one of these meetings usually coincides with the date of the Annual General Meeting.

Council has the power to determine IEU(SA) policy and to refer matters to the AGM, a Special Meeting, to Executive or a standing committee. The quorum for Council is delegate representation from at least 15 Branches. Country schools are able to arrange for a city school to carry their proxy if they find attendance in person difficult.

Members have many formal and informal avenues for input into the directions and activities of their professional and industrial association. IEU(SA) staff and Executive welcome comments and input from members on issues affecting their working lives.

Full details of the management structures of IEU(SA) are to be found in the IEU(SA) Constitution or by contacting the IEU(SA) office.
